Can Fine Art photographs be created with a $2 placemat from Kmart and a stapler?
Speak to Megan Rizzo of Studio Fascino and you will see that the answer is definitely YES!!
Watch the Video below of how she came to life and all of the behind the scenes.
As the end of the Autumn Season drew close, Bree of Dead Gorgeous Hair & Makeup Styling, mentioned to Megan "We should do a Goodbye to the Autumn Queen shoot"
OMG YES!! We should. We definitely should.
Their creative minds ran away as they blurted out colours, posing, styling, hair, makeup...(this is literally what happened) anyone who heard them would think they are both mad. But, that's the beauty of their relationship, they get each other, on a deep creative level. They bounce ideas constantly working side by side to create magical photographic & artistic beauty to put out into the world. It's their way of making the world a better place visually.
Whilst out shopping on a Thursday night with her family, Megan is wandering the isles of Kmart , trying to find something Orange for her daughter to wear to school, for a fundraiser...who chose that coulor, Orange??!!! Seriously! any who, I digress... in a busy mum trying to keep it all together, now in a daze as she was lining up for the dreaded self serve checkout, there was a lone gold placemat discarded by a previous customer at the last minute, sitting on the shelf. "Bing" the light went on. Visions started running through her mind of a very high goddess...
Megan came home and started to cut into the circular mat and created a collar that looked it had been forged from steel and painted in the finest gold. The humble gold and rubber placemat then became the centre piece of jewellery of the Autumn Queen shoot.
Fine art Photographer
I had kept the previous Autumn Queen headdresses in a glass case away from dust and damage, made from the 2 years past and they had dried so beautifully with one keeping its green tones and the other beautiful deep browns. They are now fragile but still as gorgeous as ever.
When Megan originally created them - she had people asking if she could make them for women to wear to the races as a statement fascinator. She was chuffed at the thought that people thought they were good enough.
You can tell she enjoyed making them so much and It was another burst of creativity as she knocked on the door of a Tallebudgera Valley home and asked if she could collect their leaves...they laughed and said "of course, saves us raking them up". So she grabbed the bucket from the car and filled it with all of beautifully fallen liquidamber leaves. They saw compost, Megan saw a crown fit for a Goddess.
So the headwear and the jewellery was sorted, but what would this Autumn Queen actually wear?
Megan has been a collector of vintage clothing ( mainly Kerri Ann Kennerley's 1991 sequinned wardrobe) but those sparkly frocks were not really what we needed right now. With only 2 days to get organised she need to work fast.
A trip to spotlight late on the Friday prior to the scheduled photo shoot and after wandering the isles she walked out holding meters and meters of fabrics. Racing back at the studio, before school pickup time came rushing around, Megan realised the trusty sewing machine her mother had given her for her 21st birthday gift, some 20 odd years prior, was at home in the depths of a back cupboard. With no time, Megan "got creative" with the trusty old office stapler. Yep, that's right. This outfit was held together by the corset from her costume rack and with staples, plenty of them. No glue, no sewing, but loads of staples!!!
Ask Megan about her creativity and how she creates an entire character from next to nothing and she will tell you "it's easy, for some reason, I can't explain how, I just know how it is meant to look and it always comes together"
" I already know what the end image will be a long time before I get to press the shutter on the camera. The image, the lighting, the posing, the makeup and the styling as well as the photoshop work is all done in my head beforehand"
Megan also hand paints her backdrops specifically choosing the colours and tones to match her character, she constructs the the jewellery pulling apart chains and beads to create the new look and she somehow "staples" everything all together to make it look like designer couture. Brilliant.
But she can't take credit for all of the creativity. Megan has surrounded herself with like minded creative women who have the same moral compass as her. Giving, generous and talented women. You will see Bree of Dead Gorgeous Hair & Makeup Styling featured in many of Megan's blog posts, social media accounts and in the credits of her many award winning images. Together they are a powerful team.
Bree created 3 distinct looks for the Autumn Queen shoot this day. Pushing herself creatively and nailing it every time. Megan and Bree have such a mutual love and respect for each other it is evident in their work. They bounce their ideas continuously and offer support when the other is stuck or has a creative block.
The model we had the pleasure of styling was another talented woman who has been in Studio Fascino many times before. Felix created the Metal Goddess and also the Voodoo Goddess doing her own hair and makeup and costume design. These images went on to win awards at WPPI in Las Vegas in 2017.
So we have Megan, Bree and Felix but there was also another important woman involved. Tiffany! The best "Fluffer" a girl could ask for. The fixer, the adjuster, the leaf thrower. All important jobs.
As these images are created they will be offered for sale as Fine Art prints on the Studio Fascino online store. You can see the final images here in the gallery and choose the size the suits your wall space.
